didnt cause any immediate significant damage if the car still turns on and runs fine, but every time it detonates it wears out a bit. The upgraded ECU's expands the fuel/timing maps for higher boost. Basically, it runs the injectors at a higher duty cycle and i believe retards the timing more (because of higher boost). More boost = more chance for detonation, retard timing = less chance for detonation. More heat = more chance for detonation. More fuel = less chance for detonation, and i will explain. As i said, perfect stoich ratio is 14.7:1 for optimum efficiency. However, 14.7:1 would produce whole lot more heat, and heat causes detonation, so we add more fuel (alot more fuel) to cool the chambers/mixture enough so it doesnt detonate.
